Day 1: Arrival in Bali and Preparation

  1. Arrival in Bali

    • Arrive in Bali, depending on your arrival time, you may want to rest or prepare for the trek. If you're arriving in the morning or early afternoon, there is time to arrange your gear and meet your guide.
  2. Travel to the Base Camp

    • Location: The trek typically begins from the Pura Besakih Temple or Taman Sari depending on the route you take. These are the starting points where you meet your guide.
    • Travel Time: From Ubud or Denpasar, the drive to the base of Mount Agung takes approximately 2-3 hours.
  3. Overnight Stay Near Base Camp

    • There are a few guesthouses or simple accommodations around the base camp. Some people opt to camp, but it's more common to rest in a nearby guesthouse to prepare for the early morning hike.

Day 2: Mount Agung Summit Trek

Trek Start Time: Most groups start the trek between 1:00 AM - 3:00 AM to reach the summit by sunrise. This early start is essential to enjoy the spectacular views at dawn.

  1. Departure from Base Camp

    • Route 1Besakih Temple Route – This is the most common route, taking around 5-6 hours to reach the summit. The trek is quite challenging with steep and rocky terrain.
    • Route 2Taman Sari Route – Slightly longer, taking around 6-7 hours to the summit, but it provides an alternative option for those wanting less crowded paths.
  2. Trekking to the Summit

    • As you hike, you’ll pass through forests, rocky terrains, and barren landscapes as you ascend. The higher you get, the more difficult the climb becomes due to steep slopes and volcanic gravel.
    • Difficulty: The hike is difficult, requiring good physical condition, as it's a steep ascent with rugged paths.
  3. Summit Arrival (Approx. 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM)

    • Once at the summit, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding islands, including Bali, Lombok, and the nearby Mount Rinjani. The sunrise is a magical experience, with the sun rising over the Indonesian archipelago.
    • Time at Summit: Spend 15-30 minutes at the summit for photos and to enjoy the views, but be mindful of time, as it can get windy and cold at the top.
  4. Descent Back to Base Camp

    • After sunrise and taking in the views, begin the descent back to the base camp. It typically takes 3-4 hours to descend, depending on the route and pace.
    • Completion Time: You should reach the base camp by late morning or early afternoon.
  5. Return to Hotel

    • Once back at the base, travel to your hotel or accommodation. The trek will be physically demanding, so be prepared to relax and recuperate for the remainder of the day.
